How Sus works

Turn the bottle around. Sus reads the ingredient list and grades it for your skin.
Three steps
- Show Sus the product. Point your camera at the ingredient list on the back. You can also scan the barcode or search by name.
- Sus reads the list carefully. When the photo is too blurry to read well, it asks for another photo instead of grading it.
- You get a grade for your Skin ID. Sus weighs the list against your skin type and what your skin reacts to, so the same product can get a different grade for different skin.
What Sus won't do
- Grade the front of the bottle. The front is an ad. Sus uses it to tell which product you're holding, then reads the list.
- Guess. When it can't read the list or find the product, it says so.
- Make up percentages. Brands don't have to print them. Where an ingredient sits on the list is the honest signal.
- Give medical advice. Sus is a cosmetics tool.
Where the lists come from
- The ingredient list printed in your photo. If the photo also shows the barcode, Sus looks that up first.
- For a barcode, Sus's own product bank, then Open Beauty Facts.
- Lists found on the web aren't graded until a person has checked them.
- When Sus is unsure of a name, it checks it against about 33,500 ingredient names from CosIng, the EU's cosmetic ingredient database.
